Radu Stern
An art historian who specializes in modern art, photography and theory of the image, Radu Stern (born 1951) is highly acclaimed for his work as a teacher. In charge of the educational programme at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne since 2004, he has taught at various universities and institutions in Bucharest and Switzerland, underlined by his achievements as assistant director of the École d’arts appliqués in Vevey between 1993 and 2004. A prolific lecturer, his main areas of research are the history and the teaching of photography, documentary photography and the ‘decisive moment’ of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Also of note are his projects on the historic avant-gardes, in particular on Tatlin, architecture and fashion - the subject of his book Against Fashion. Clothing as Art, 1850-1930 (MIT Press, 2005). A member of the jury at various international photography prizes and festivals, he has been a visiting tutor at foreign universities (University of Massachusetts, Université de Neuchâtel) and has helped curate exhibitions in Lausanne and Zurich.
