A professor at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and at various institutions and universities in other countries (Harvard University, University of Wales, Le Fresnoy), he is the author of a number of books on photography, including El beso de Judas. Fotografía y Verdad (Gustavo Gili, 1997) and Ciencia y Fricción (Mestizo, 1998). A co-founder of the magazine Photovision, of which he was editor in chief, he is a member of the editorial committee of the Fotografía collection published by Editorial Gustavo Gili (Barcelona), and the editor of Estética Fotográfica (Blume, 1984/Gustavo Gili, 2003) and Fotografia: Crisis d’Història (Actar, 2003), among others. A driving force behind numerous photography events, in 1979 he organized the Jornades Catalanes de Fotografia and in 1982 co-founded the Primavera Fotogràfica photography festival in Barcelona. Appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 1994, and artistic director of the Rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles in 1996, in 1998 he was awarded the National Photography Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
