About this blog

‘The Ubiquity of the Image’ is the title of a dialogue proposed by KRTU that will be carried on during the months of February, March and April this year under the auspices of SCAN 08 Photographic Manifestation, with the participation of three internationally acclaimed theorists of the image - Joan Fontcuberta, Christian Caujolle and Radu Stern. Conceived and set in motion by Joan Fontcuberta, the project will consist of a first phase on the internet, open to and welcoming external comment, and will conclude with a face-to-face discussion in the Teatre Metropol in Tarragona, at 7.00 p.m. on the 17th of April. The aim of this dialogue is to stimulate reflection and discussion on the role of the image in present-day society, not only in the realm of visual culture, but also in terms of its wider consequences: social, economic, political and so on. As a point of departure, the dialogue has been articulated in three thematic areas which can be summed up as follows:

  1. ‘The image and the reality’ will set out to analyse the way images have come to take the place of things; that is to say, how the ubiquity of the image usurps the ubiquity of reality as such.
  2. ‘The omnipresence of the image’ will attempt to show how the image has effectively occupied every sphere of human activity, shaping our decisions, our activities, etc.
  3. ‘The intangibility of the image’ will study the processes by which the image has become immaterial. Virtual or electronic, the image no longer consists of a physical support, and this has contributed to its dissemination, making it ever more fluid and extensive.
